What area really is

Area is just how much flat space a shape covers. Before any formula, area is something you can count: how many unit squares fit inside?

Count the squares

A unit square is 1 unit on each side. Lay them edge to edge to tile a shape, and the area is simply how many you used.

That rectangle holds 12 unit squares, so its area is 12 square units. No formula yet — just counting.

The shortcut

You don't have to count one at a time. The squares line up in a grid: 4 in each row, 3 rows down. So 4 × 3 = 12. That's where area = width × height comes from — it's a faster way to count the very same squares.

Whatever the shape, area always answers one question: how many unit squares would cover it? Every formula you'll meet is just a shortcut for that count.
