Count a wall the way the framer does — one stud every space plus the starter — and see the corner, tee, and opening allowances as declared conventions instead of magic numbers.
Nobody measures a wall stud by stud. You lay out the plate once, mark every 16 inches, and then the wall is a count — and counts have a trap in them that has shorted more lumber orders than bad math ever did.
Six spaces, seven studs
An 8 ft wall at 16" on center: 96 ÷ 16 = 6. Six spaces. But a space has a stud at each end, and the last stud of one space is the first stud of the next — so the wall needs seven.
That "+1" is the starter: the stud at the very beginning of the wall, before the first space exists. Miss it and you're one short on every wall in the house — a rounding error that scales.
Why 16, and why it isn't negotiable
16 inches isn't ergonomics or tradition. It's the sheet.
A 4×8 sheet of sheathing is 96 inches wide, and 96 ÷ 16 = 6 exactly — so the far edge of every sheet lands on the center of a stud, with half the stud left for the next sheet to fasten to. The same is true at 24" OC (96 ÷ 24 = 4) and at 12" (÷ 12 = 8). Any spacing that doesn't divide 96 evenly leaves a sheet edge floating in the air.
The layout serves the panel. That's why you mark from a single end of the wall and never "reset" the tape at an opening — one drift and every sheet edge past it hangs.
The extras are conventions, not magic
A real wall is the base count plus the framing that makes corners, intersections and openings work. These are field conventions — declared, defensible, and worth knowing you can argue with:

Headers and cripples are cut stock, not full studs — they get called out separately, because they come out of different lengths.
So a 24 ft wall at 16" OC with two corners and one door:
19 + (2 × 2) + 4 = 27 studs. Plates are simpler and easy to forget: a double top plate and a single bottom plate means 3 × 24 = 72 lineal feet of plate stock, before you add the laps at the corners.
Run it
Open the wall framing takeoff stripped to a bare 8 ft wall — no corners, no openings, no waste:
- It reads 7 studs. That's the picture above, exactly.
- Now build the real wall: length 24, two corners, one opening. Watch the 27, and watch the plate footage move on its own.
- Switch to 24" OC. Fewer studs — and now go ask whether your siding, your drywall thickness and your code's shear requirements are happy with that. The takeoff answers "how many", never "may I".
