Grading, by design

Grading is designing a scoring function, and most of us inherited ours without reading it. A worksheet is a sample from a problem space; a rubric is a function with a floor nobody prints; a course grade is a contract of weights that quietly decides things weeks before the final. Make all three parameters explicit — then find out what you owe a student, and when.
